Moving into extended care with supportive housing at Able To Change Recovery is an important step, and a little preparation makes the transition smoother. The checklist below covers what to bring so you feel comfortable and focused on your recovery, along with what to leave at home. Because some items depend on what each home provides, we recommend confirming the details with our team before move-in day.
Personal Identification and Documents
- Government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
- Insurance information
- Any relevant medical records
Clothing
- Comfortable, season-appropriate clothing
- Appropriate footwear
- Sleepwear
- Undergarments and socks
Personal Hygiene Items
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Soap or body wash
- Towels and washcloths
- Deodorant
- Hairbrush or comb
Bedding
- Sheets and pillowcases (please check first, as some may be provided)
- Blankets or a comforter
- Pillows
Medications
- Current prescriptions in their original containers
- Any necessary over-the-counter medications
Please note that all medications are checked in with staff at move-in.
Personal Items
- Cell phone and charger (use may be subject to house guidelines)
- Notebook and pen
- Books or reading materials
- Photos or small personal mementos
Financial Items
- A small amount of cash or a debit card for personal expenses
Before You Arrive
- Arrange your transportation to and from the home
- Review the house rules and expectations so you know what to expect
What Not to Bring
To keep every home safe, comfortable, and supportive for recovery, certain items are not permitted. Please leave the following at home:
- Weapons or dangerous items, including firearms, knives, or anything that could cause harm
- Illegal drugs or any controlled substances not prescribed to you by a doctor
- Alcohol, in any form
- Drug paraphernalia, such as pipes, needles, or rolling papers
- Large amounts of cash, to prevent loss or theft
- Valuables or expensive jewelry, for the same reason
- Non-prescribed or unapproved medications, which must always be reviewed by staff first
- Large electronics, such as TVs, gaming consoles, or speakers
- Personal appliances, such as hot plates, microwaves, or space heaters
- Pets, as our supportive housing is unable to accommodate them
- Sharp objects, such as razors or scissors, which may need to be approved or kept with staff
- Inappropriate or suggestive clothing that conflicts with the house dress code
- Anything that promotes substance use or works against a healthy recovery environment
Outside food and drinks may also be limited depending on the home. If you are unsure whether you can bring a specific item, just ask. Our team is always happy to help you prepare.
